As a Dallas family photographer, I know how meaningful it is to capture portraits that stand the test of time. Traditional portrait photography is all about elegance, simplicity, and creating an image that will be cherished for generations. Whether you’re scheduling an heirloom session for your child or planning a classic portrait for your family, a little preparation goes a long way in ensuring your portraits turn out beautifully.

How to Prepare for a Traditional Portrait Photography Session

    What is Traditional Portrait Photography?

Traditional portrait photography focuses on timeless, refined images with minimal distractions. These sessions are all about capturing natural expressions and classic compositions that never go out of style. Unlike trendy or overly stylized photography, traditional portraits are meant to be displayed for decades, passed down through generations as heirlooms.

My heirloom sessions are held in a controlled studio setting with soft, flattering lighting that enhances delicate features. The use of artificial light allows for consistency. Consistency in your lighting is especially important when considering the weather outside as well as having children photographed on different days or even years in between. The focus is solely on your child, without any busy backgrounds or props to take away from the portrait’s elegance. These portraits are often used to celebrate milestones, such as a child’s first birthday.

What to Wear for Your Session

Choosing the right clothing is key to achieving a timeless look in traditional portrait photography. For children’s heirloom portraits, classic styles such as smocked dresses, Peter Pan collars, or simple linen outfits work beautifully. Light, neutral colors like whites, creams, pastels, and soft blues or pinks photograph best, keeping the attention on your child’s expression. Avoid bold patterns, logos, or overly trendy outfits, as these can take away from the portrait’s timeless feel.

For family portraits, coordinating soft, neutral tones across all outfits creates a cohesive look without being overly matching. Simple fabrics with delicate textures, like cotton or linen, photograph well and add an elegant touch. If the portrait is for a child, barefoot is often the best choice, maintaining a natural, classic aesthetic.

    Don't Forget the Details

Small details can make a big difference in traditional portrait photography. Before the session, take a few moments to ensure faces are clean, hair is neatly styled, and little hands are free of ink, marker, or scratches. If your child wears jewelry, consider removing it to keep the focus on their face.

For younger children, a well-timed session can help capture them at their best. Ensure that the session is not scheduled after a busy day on the sports field, or during your childs nap time. Schedule the portrait when they’re well-rested and fed to keep them comfortable and happy. Bringing a favorite small toy or comfort item can also help them feel at ease in front of the camera. Prior to your session I also send a guide to help you better prepare that goes into much more detail.
